African Batik reverse appliqué - African Textiles -SOLD
Reverse appliqué has been used to create this striking design. It is an art form that has been around for centuries and consist of two layers of fabric being sewn together. The design is marked on the top material and cut out. The top material is then laid and hand sewn onto a contrasting material to reveal the design. In this instance, the artist used Nigerian batik which has undergone the tie and die process to create the foreground on which the magnificent mask design lies.
As the name suggests, the tie and dye technique is a process when the material is tied or banded up in such a way that dye only reaches the area where the dye is applied and thus creating a pattern. In using this wonderfully created design as the fore cloth, the artist has ensured that this artistic piece of art is very striking.
