African Painting - Durbar Festival Horse Rider - - African Art

This oil painting depicts a scene from the durbar festival, which takes place in Kano in the northern part of Nigeria. The durbar festival is a very colourful event, which is in essence a royal parade complete, with all the pomp and ceremonies associated with such parades. The festival original started as a royal show of military strength and affirmation of loyalty by the military to their ruling Emir, but now tends to be tied in with the Muslim celebration of Eid. A brightly coloured umbrella provides shade for the horse rider and the horse on which he rides has also been adorned. The people surrounding the rider have also donned on their finery. This is a wonderful vivid oil painting flowing with warm colours. It is truly a delight to look on.
