This is an ebony scuplture of an African woman at work. Women play an important role in African society; they are considered to be very industrious and are undeniable helpmates to their family or husbands. In some parts of Africa, the birth of a female is more greatly anticipated than the birth of a male, as it is felt that through the women, the continuation of the people is assured. Also in some parts of Africa women can be seen carrying vessels on their heads, such as clay pots containing water from the stream or baskets containing items to sell in the market. This is a lovely sculpture, which has been highly polished by the carver to give it a stunning natural sheen.
