Baule Mask
Baule masks orginate from the Baule tribe are from the Ivory Coast but strangely; they speak Akan, which is a language native to Ghana in West Africa - this has given rise to the speculation that the Baule were not originally from the Ivory Coast. This Baule mask would have been used in masquerades called Guri, which essentially involves eight pairs of masquerades whose identities are fully concealed through of the usage of raffia – the masquerades wear masks which personifies the young, old and women an example of which can be seen here. The purpose of the masquerade is to remind everyone of the social order, which is imperative to the Baules. This Baule mask idealizes the Baule concept of beauty as can been seen by the small delicate features and the scarification marks. The elaborate hairstyle means that the mask represents a mature Baule woman.
