Dan Deangle Mask - SOLD
Dan Deangle Mask is from the Dan tribe in Ivory Coast. The Dan tribe have a great many different types of masks some of which have multiple uses. This mask is very characteristic of the Dan Deangle mask, which have a ridge in the middle of the forehead and slit eyes. The word Deangle can be roughly translated to mean ‘dancing, miming masquerade’. The intermediary who acted between the village and the forest initiation camp would have worn this mask. The initiation camp would have consisted of young males who would sometime be involved in initiations that could last up to four months. It has been suggested that some of the initiations included ceremonial circumcisions of the boys and it was at this point that the masks would have been used to represent the female and assure the boys that all would be well. The masks were also used in different roles such as reassurance, and provision of food.
