Dogon marriage stool/table

This marriage stool comes from the Dogon tribe in Mali. This stool is presented to the bride on her wedding day and quite symbolic. The form on either side of the stool represents a man and a woman. The woman is recognized by her hair and her full breasts suggesting a marriage blessed with children, whilst the man can be recognized by his beard. The mutual role of the male and female is mapped out. The people carved around the side of the table are the spectators of the marriage and also the elders who will offer help and support throughout the marriage. This is an amazing piece of furniture, which has deep traditional roots.
