Dogon Stool - African Art
This Dogon stool from Mali is used by the high priest in Dogon villages. The priest or Hogon is a figure of authority and oversees activities such as the planting and harvesting ceremonies. The stool is symbolically used the Hogon priests in these activities as it represents a throne. The top of the stool, which is supported by four Dogon couples, represents the sun. The incisions at the side represent water and light, and the placing of the couples represents north, east, south and west. This is a wonderful piece of African art that is very rooted in the religion and beliefs of the Dogon people of Mali.
