Ebony Festac Mask - African Mask -
The first Festac mask was commissioned by the king of Benin is Nigeria for his mother. His reign covered the arrival of the Portuguese in Benin and the stylized head of Portuguese traders can be seen on the crown of the mask. This original mask can be seen in the African room in the British Museum in London
This wonderfully crafted ebony mask has been carved out of the better known brown ebony wood. The skill of the carver can be quite clearly seen and appreciated from the stylised heads of the Portuguese traders on the crown to the elaborate collar that frames the chin. This mask measures 31cm (12.1inches) in length and 13cm (5.1inches) in width. This will wonderfully grace any decor and would make a great gift.
