Fakeye style carving - Shango - SOLD

Ayodeji Bankole who worked as an apprentice under Akin Fakeye carved this amazing carving. The Fakeye family of Nigeria Africa is very well known as an extremely talented family of master craftsmen. The intricate style of carving that they are known for has been passed down from father to son for many generations and their immediately recognisable style of carvings are increasingly being appreciated by a growing number of art connoisseurs. Ayodeji Bankole has now opened his own studio and his talent can be seen through the skill and creativity of his work. This particular Fakeye style sculpture depicts Shango. Shango was and is still viewed by some to be god of thunder. The distinguishing feature of Shango is the axe, which he uses to summon thunder. In this depiction of Shango, the axe, which he uses, can be seen crowing this particular sculpture. Below the axe are heads of his devotees. In his hands he holds a staff and a cockerel. An amulet hangs down his back from the beads, which are around his neck. His wrapper/skirt has been carved with amazing detail.
