Fertility Doll - Akuaba Mother and Child Fertility Doll
This sculpture is from the Akan tribe in Ghana. It depicts a mother and child. Dolls similar to these may had been commissioned by women wishing to get pregnant. The Akan society is matrilineal, family lines being passed from mother to daughter so it is essential that the woman have daughters to perpetuate the family line.
The doll demonstrates the Akan concept of beauty; high oval flattened forehead, a small mouth and a neck ringed to depict creases caused by fat, indicating a healthy diet – on her lap lays a baby which she proudly displays as a testament of her fertility and achievement.
The size of the carving indicates that it would have been most probably placed in the home to bring fertility to the home. The carver has also further beautified the doll by carving a very elaborate and intricate headdress.
