The Yoruba woman featured here is wearing the traditional Yoruba attire with a headscarf called headtie, which can be tied, folded and in some cases pinned to create numerous elaborate styles. This sculpture is very unique and uncommon and very unlike the more modernized versions, which are more readily available and poorly made - this piece has been carved by an older traditional Yoruba craftsman. The sculpture has been carved out of a mahogany type wood found in the southwest region of Nigeria, popular for its lightness and hardwearing properties.
