The Yaure are a small tribe that can be found in parts of the Ivory Coast. It has also been suggested that they are also a part of the Akan tribe of Ghana. The mask from the Yaure are believed to have very special spiritual powers – so much so that when they are worn during ceremonies women are not allowed to look at the mask. Even the men that wear the mask treat it with great respect and reverence. When not in use, the masks are kept in a scared grove outside the village. It is only when the spirit no longer uses the mask that outsiders are allowed to see it. This mask has a rich chocolaty patina. The stark beauty of the Yaure mask has caused them to be highly collectable art; and looking at this you can see why. This is a wonderful Yaure mask.
