Zaire Luba (Baluba) Headrest
This headrest originates from the Baluba people of Zaire (Democratic Republic of Congo). The original purpose of the headrest was primarily as a pillow to preserve intricate coiffures that were traditional among the Baluba people. They were also sometimes called
seat of dreams, as the Baluba people believed that dreams foretold
the future and also gave warnings. The Baluba headrests were personal to the individual and were sometimes buried with the
individual upon death. They were also prized possessions of Baluba chiefs and were used mainly by them.
