This Zulu Shield is uniquely hand crafted shield originates from South Africa. The weapons behind the shield are the Death Club - Knobkerrie - and Stabbing Spear. Historically when the warriors went into battle they would first use their throwing Spears and then engage in Hand-to-Hand Combat. They would use the short stabbing spear to inflict a fatal stab to the body (very much the same as the Roman Stabbing Sword). Then they would proceed to batter the opponent’s skull in with the Knobkerrie! Zulu shields were not only used in battles, they are made using many different animal skins as each skin has a meaning and also designates status to the user. The many different skins are used for different ceremonies such as the coming of age and initiation ceremonies performed by both young girls and boys throughout Africa.
